Feel Good Friday: Holiday spirit shines in the City of Temple

As we kick off the new year, we want to highlight some of the acts of kindness that took place throughout the holiday season.

Christmas Dinner

On Christmas Eve Melinda Hackney and her family received an unexpected welfare check from Temple Police Officer Pierre Greene

Hackney’s neighbors contacted the Temple Police Department because they were concerned about Hackney and her family. Hackney is a cancer survivor with kids.

While Officer Green performed the welfare check Hackney said she was in excruciating pain.

“He was very concerned. He asked if there was anything, he could do for me and my family and I said no sir,” said Hackney.

However, shortly after Officer Green left, he returned with food for Hackley and her family.

He blessed me and my family with Christmas dinner,” said Hackney.

She and her family would like to thank Officer Green and the Temple Police Department for the generous donation.

Animal Shelter Donation

The holiday spirit did not stop there for the City of Temple. Donations to the Temple Animal Shelter poured in toward the end of the year.

Irene Coe and her husband are among those who made sure the shelter had plenty of supplies on hand. The two made several donations in November and December which included cat toys, kitten food, dry dog and cat food, wet can dog and cat food.

“I believe if pets are happy, aware, socially playful, clean, groomed and held they will be seen as a prominent adoptable family pet, an additional family member,” said Coe.

Coe was motivated to donate to the shelter after she found a Russian Blue cat who turned out to be pregnant. After the cat had her kittens, Coe kept two and gave up three to the shelter to be adopted.

I have pictures of the births and until the day they were old enough to give to be adopted. That was the toughest part to have to let three of them go,” said Coe.

Being an animal lover comes naturally to Coe and her husband who have four miniature schnauzers, one older rescue cat, a younger cat and her two kittens.

Coe said in all she’s not looking for any recognition but simply loves donating to the shelter and wishes all pets had a home, food, and people to love and care for them as much as she does for her pets.

The Temple Animal Shelter also received donations from Dana and Brodie Reed. They donated dog and cat food along with some treats to ensure animals are well fed and get special snacks

The shelter is always accepting donations of dog food, wet cat food and cat litter as well as any other donations community members would like to give.
