Landscapers

FACT SHEET: LANDSCAPE BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

When it rains, stormwater picks up trash, chemicals, and materials from landscaping services. Stormwater enters into our drainage system untreated eventually leading to our lakes, rivers, creeks, and streams.

Yard Waste (tree limbs, leaves, grass, compost, dirt/soil)

  • The City of Temple ordinances prohibit disposing of yard waste in the streets, creeks, and streams
  • Collect and bag yard waste. Compost yard waste or place the bags at residential curbs for regularly scheduled brush and bulk days
  • Protect stockpiles and landscaping materials from wind and rain by storing them under tarps or secured plastic sheeting

Yard Chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers)

  • Use safer, more organic products that are biodegradable
  • Always read the label and follow the directions for proper use
  • Store yard chemicals indoors or in a shed or storage cabinet
  • Use chemicals sparingly and sweep up driveways, sidewalks, and gutters
  • Never dispose of unused pesticides & fertilizers in the trash. Residents can dispose of unused pesticides and fertilizers at the City of Temple Hazardous Household Waste disposal event held every year on the second Saturday of October.

Spill Cleanup

  • Vacuum or sweep materials
  • Use as little water as possible
  • Keep spills from entering streets, gutters, and storm drains

Employee Training

  • Train all employees on these proper practices
  • Record training
