Historic Preservation
Local Historic District
Temple currently has two locally designated residential historic districts, known officially as the North Central Temple Historic District and the African American Churches Historic District. Modifications to buildings within these Districts are subject to Chapter 17 of the Code of Ordinances to ensure the historic appropriateness of the changes through a certificate of appropriateness (COA) application. These applications are reviewed and approved by either the Historic Preservation Officer or the Historic Preservation Board. Access a copy of the COA application.
National Register Historic District Most of downtown Temple is located within a National Register Historic District designated in 2005 and called the Temple Commercial Historic District, which also qualifies Contributing buildings for Federal (20%) and State (25%) historic tax credits.
