UPDATE: Councilmember Davis to Hold Over in District 1 Seat

(TEMPLE, TX – January 24, 2018) Last Friday, January 19, 2018, Mayor Pro Tem and District 1 Councilmember Tim Davis announced that he will seek election to the office of Mayor in the May 5 election. The State Constitution provides that an elected official who has more than 1 year and 30 days left on their current term automatically resigns their seat at the time they announce candidacy for another public office. As such, the District 1 seat is now vacant. In this situation, State law allows a Councilmember to hold over in the position until his successor is elected and qualified for office. Therefore, Councilmember Davis will hold over in the District 1 seat until his successor is elected and qualified.

The City Council is expected to call a special election at their February 1 City Council meeting to fill the District 1 vacancy. The special election would also be held on May 5. Filing for the District 1 seat would begin immediately following Council’s action to call the special election.
